Another One Bites the Dust...

Well friends, Erik has joined the ever-growing, yet exclusive club that only the unfortunate belong to. He tore his ACL. I'm no longer the lone ranger in this marriage! The list in our family is long. My dad, Erik's dad, my brother Nick, myself, now Erik have all torn it.

He did it skiing on Presidents' Day. He went off one of the jumps, overshot the landing and fell out of the sky from about 25-30 feet in the air to his side. His knee popped and that was that! He actually skied on it for the rest of the day, believe it or not. He made it into the orthopedic surgeon's office by Wednesday, where the doc confirmed it. He got his surgery scheduled for Thursday and in he went!

The surgery went well. Only his ACL needed repairing, which is a huge blessing. Had anything else been torn, he would have a much longer recovery time. The surgeon took a piece of Erik's patella tendon to replace the ACL and this is much more painful in recovery, but the all-over recovery time is much quicker than with a cadaver or a hamstring graft.

His recovery is going okay, about as good as could be expected. The first couple of days were rough. His pain meds weren't really working and he had a hard time not feeling nauseous everytime he got up. He's already doing a lot of bending and stretching exercises! I can't believe how much has changed since I tore mine. I was put in a brace that limited my movement for about 2 weeks, couldn't put weight on it, etc. Now they're asking you to start putting full weight on that leg as soon as you're out of surgery. Unreal! As you can imagine, its tough. But he's totally kicking ass and I'm so proud of him. He'll be back on his skis, in his kayak and climbing rocks in no time.

We are VERY thankful for visitors, so if you'd like to come say hi, we would really appreciate it! If you're not able to visit, we'd love to hear from you, so drop us a line.

More updates to come!
